What I would like my peers to focus on when reviewing my paper: I need to find a better way to organize, organization is key. I would also appreciate comments on flow and general sound of the paper, at times I feel a bit too unprofessional and sometimes I feel too scholarly. I need help finding a good balance I suppose.
Here is my working thesis: As evident by the overwhelming appraisal from the common film audience, The Hurt Locker was a movie that spoke volumes about the destructiveness and addictiveness of war. However, the film was not what the production team heralded it to be. According to veterans and current service members, The Hurt Locker is riddled with inaccuracies that are disrespectful to those that served in the war. Due to turn-of-the-century covert warfare and civilian naivety, the positive praise received by The Hurt Locker comes from the naïve citizens who applaud the film’s artistry and subtle messages. What goes largely unmentioned is that The Hurt Locker also received a fair amount of negative reviews from veterans and current enlisted members of the US Army.
Below are some of my previous thoughts on what topic I would use for my paper. Obviously I have changed my ideas on what I would be talking about because the new thesis ideas I have come up with are more focused on how the time period does not allow for direct access to information regarding the war. My new ideas revolve around the fact that there are two very different groups reviewing the film and one group does not know the whole truth of what is happening in the war because of how secretive war has become.
The Hurt Locker was made to highlight how destructive war is both physically and emotionally with a further spotlight on how important vices are to defusing the wrong emotions that ensue from the mental torture of war. After finding this source I really found my purpose of this assignment and I know what I want to write about. I will discuss that idea above but also take note on how the genre of war changes with respect to time period.
It also makes the claim that this movie is about a larger story of the war. I could use this article to discuss a more different, but more radical theory that The Hurt Locker was received so well by audiences because it was an advanced form of political propaganda. I could discuss how I think that early war movies used American heroes and camaraderie to portray soldiers and wars as heroic American activities. After discussing that I would bring up the idea that over time war movies become more subtle forms of American pride propaganda. This would be difficult to discuss but definitely implements the historical background more than my other thesis idea.
